The Ulumbaza Red is a characterful red blend from the Springfontein Rim. The Ulumbaza wines follow the same sensory philosophy as our Terroir Selection, but are created as stand-alone blends. What unites them is Pinotage as a component of the blend.

For the Ulumbaza Red, Pinotage is combined with Merlot and Chenel. The cool Walker Bay climate, the proximity to the Atlantic and the highly alkaline maritime limestone soils give the blend its characteristic freshness and distinctive expression.

On the nose, red fruit and berries appear, accompanied by wild herbs and savoury, spicy notes. On the palate the wine is medium-bodied, with well-structured, round tannins. Earthy and spicy nuances accompany the long, harmonious finish.

The three varieties are vinified and matured separately, and are only blended into the final cuvée a few weeks before bottling. The grapes are hand-picked and sorted, and fermented on the skins for an average of 16 days in open 1,000-litre fermenters. After malolactic fermentation, maturation takes place for 20 months in second- and third-fill French oak barriques.
